When Michelle Bexelius, owner of ecoRemedi, heard of Stella’s plight, she contacted the family and offered them free ecoConsultation and ecoInterior services.

By doing something as simple as repainting Stella’s bedroom using high-quality non-VOC paints and primers (Dick’s Color Center and Pratt & Lambert), Bexelius is proving that ecoHealthy can also be ecoBeautiful. “There is always an alternative [to unhealthy products]; you just have to pick your priorities and know what to look for,” she explains.

ecoRemedi checked the electromagnetic frequency (EMF) levels, moved Stella’s bed, and checked for lead in the windowsills. On the advice of ecoRemedi, the family is also getting new, healthy mattresses, pillows and bedding thanks to (Eclectic Home), sustainable cork floors (Eco Haus) and custom designed textiles (cool cotton). The bedroom was cleared of clutter, the stuffed animals were minimized and the space was organized to create a harmonious haven.

We also want her room to resonate with her style making it fun for an almost 9 year old and her 4 year old sister to call their own. Michelle designed curtains and a duvet cover and pillow to brighten the room. Melamine furniture and plastic storage containers were replaced with solid wood pieces to improve the indoor air quality.

It will be a bright moment when Stella sees her room for the first time. We will be there smiling too knowing we helped improve the health of her room so a little girl can heal and grow up and fulfill her dreams.

Air Testing Results

ecoRemedi has suggested to check with the NW Natural Gas to come and see if there could be a leak or the have their HVAC system inspected to help clean the indoor air. There were also higher levels of carbon dioxide which can result in a blocked air duct. Every room should have clean air flowing. We recommend a filter and UV light to cut down on bacteria and allergens. The room was retested and the air results were much improved.

We will test again after the room is complete and post the results on www.ecoremedi.com.

EMF results:

Readings were higher than normal at the original site of the bed. Looking beneath the room, in the basement we discovered there were many wires that were concentrated there resulting in a higher voltage reading. When the body is exposed to high amounts of voltage it reduces the immune system. Solution: We moved the bed across the room and placed a dresser there.

Find out where the top toxins are lurking in your home that could be affecting your child’s health. Learn what products to avoid and what healthy, safe ones to replace them with. Michelle recommends testing your indoor air quality for chemical VOC’s, radon, and EMR (electromagnetic radiation)- the new pollution that contributes to childhood illnesses. She provides simple solutions that give you and your family peace of mind.

Environmental toxins are everywhere and we show you how be your own advocate so you can take control of your space, so it doesn’t take control of you. There are still 80,000 chemicals in products today that aren’t approved by the FDA, only 200 are. Until the Toxics Substance Control Act (TSCA) is changed, people need to be more in control of their environment.

Here are Eco Remedi’s Top toxins to avoid for you and your kids:

EMR – Electromagnetic Radiation – test all sitting and sleeping areas. Health effects: lowers immune system, cancers.

PBDE’s – (fire retardants) found in mattresses, pillows, car seats, pjs, furniture. Health effects: neurotoxic chemical.

Triclosan- Antibacterial products. Castile soap does the same job. Health effects: damaging to the immune and reproductive systems.

PFC – Perfluorinated Chemicals – dental floss, non stick, Teflon, popcorn bags, jackets. Health effects: cancer, liver damage.

PVC – flooring, toys, jackets, binders, shower curtains. Health effects: Endocrine disrupter.

Phthalates – Synthetic fragrances, plastic toys, bottles. Health effects: Endocrine disrupter.

BPA – dental fillings, plastic food storage, water bottles Health effects: Endocrine disrupter.

Parabens – preservative found in hair and skin products, cosmetics, personal lubricants, toothpaste. Health effects: Endocrine disrupter.

Press Release of Senator Lautenberg

Lautenberg Introduces “Safe Chemicals Act” to Protect Americans from Toxic Chemicals

Measure Will Require Safety Testing for Chemicals

Contact: Lautenberg Press Office (202) 224-3224
Thursday, April 15, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced legislation to overhaul the “Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976” (TSCA), an antiquated law that in its current state, leaves Americans at risk of exposure to toxic chemicals. Lautenberg, who chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics and Environmental Health, introduced the “Safe Chemicals Act of 2010” to protect the health of families and the environment.

“America’s system for regulating industrial chemicals is broken,” said Senator Lautenberg. “Parents are afraid because hundreds of untested chemicals are found in their children’s bodies. EPA does not have the tools to act on dangerous chemicals and the chemical industry has asked for stronger laws so that their customers are assured their products are safe. My ‘Safe Chemicals Act’ will breathe new life into a long-dead statute by empowering EPA to get tough on toxic chemicals. Chemical safety reform is not a Democratic or Republican issue, it is a common-sense issue and I look forward to building bipartisan support for this measure.”

The “Safe Chemicals Act of 2010” requires safety testing of all industrial chemicals, and puts the burden on industry to prove that chemicals are safe in order stay on the market. Under current policy, the EPA can only call for safety testing after evidence surfaces demonstrating a chemical is dangerous. As a result, EPA has been able to require testing for just 200 of the more than 80,000 chemicals currently registered in the United States and has been able to ban only five dangerous substances. The new legislation will give EPA more power to regulate the use of dangerous chemicals and require manufacturers to submit information proving the safety of every chemical in production and any new chemical seeking to enter the market.

Over the last several months, Sen. Lautenberg has chaired a series of hearings to help craft the “Safe Chemicals Act” with dozens of witnesses including business leaders, public officials, scientists, doctors, academics, and non-profit organizations. Through the hearings, public health groups, environmentalists, industry representatives and the EPA have expressed support for reforms to our nation’s toxic substance laws. The “Safe Chemicals Act of 2010” comports with the reform principles laid out by the Obama Administration, the American Chemistry Council and the Safer Chemicals Healthy Families Coalition.

The text of the “Safe Chemicals Act of 2010″ can be found here and a full summary of the bill can be found here.

Highlights of the “Safe Chemicals Act of 2010”

Provides EPA with sufficient information to judge a chemical’s safety. Requires manufacturers to develop and submit a minimum data set for each chemical they produce, while also preventing duplicative or unnecessary testing. EPA will have full authority to request additional information needed to determine the safety of a chemical.

Prioritizes chemicals based on risk. Calls on the EPA to categorize chemicals based on risk, and focus resources on evaluating those most likely to cause harm.

Ensures safety threshold is met for all chemicals on the market. Places the burden of proof on chemical manufacturers to prove the safety of their chemicals. All uses must be identified and determined safe for the chemical to enter the market or continue to be used.

Takes fast action to address highest risk chemicals. Requires EPA to take fast action to reduce risk from chemicals that have already been proven dangerous. In addition, the EPA Administrator is given authority to act quickly if any chemical poses an imminent hazard.

Creates open access to reliable chemical information. Establishes a public database to catalog the information submitted by chemical manufacturers and the EPA’s safety determinations. The EPA will impose requirements to ensure the information collected is reliable.

Promotes innovation and development of green chemistry. Establishes grant programs and research centers to foster the development of safe chemical alternatives, and brings some new chemicals onto the market using an expedited review process.

My accountant always has told me, “keep your receipts”, it’s the responsible thing to do to log data and report to the IRS for “write-off’s.” After reading the recent findings that the thermal paper you receive when you purchase something has BPA in it. I am telling everyone I meet about this to encourage retailers to purchase the alternative to keep their employees and customers BPA – FREE.

I found this resource from Laughing Planet Cafe in Portland who made the switch. Food Front also make the switch. Buy thermal paper without BPA. http://www.pospaper.com/19015dt.html

Thermal paper is widely used for point-of-sale receipts, prescription labels, airline tickets and lottery tickets. Thermal printers use paper that is coated with a dye and developer (BPA or an alternative chemical). Heat from the thermal printing head triggers a reaction between the dye and developer, allowing the black print to appear. In an effort to quantify how much BPA would transfer to a person’s hand, the laboratory performed wipe tests on four BPA-laden receipts. In all four cases, BPA transferred from the receipts to the wipes. An average of 2.4 percent of the receipts’ total BPA content wiped off, suggesting that a person who handled receipts would be exposed to some BPA in the thermal paper.
http://www.fastcompany.com/1674881/environmental-working-group-finds-bpa-covered-receipts-from-safeway-whole-foods-walmart

Bisphenol A (BPA)
Definition: A synthetic substance widely used to make polycarbonated plastics for the past 50 years to make them durable. Type of plastic: polycarbonate #7.
Products: Found in food and drink containers, the lining of tin cans, toys, baby bottles, dental sealants, flame-retardants,plastic wraps and now recently discovered in thermal receipt paper from the register. This chemical easily leaches out into food and water. Polycarbonate plastic, which is clear and nearly shatter-proof, is used to make a variety of common products including baby and water bottles, sports equipment, medical and dental devices, dental fillings and sealants, lenses, CDs and DVDs, and household electronics. Epoxy resins containing bisphenol A are used as coatings on the inside of almost all food and beverage cans. Bisphenol A is also a precursor to the flame retardant, tetrabromobisphenol A, and was formerly used as a fungicide.

Health problems: Endocrine Disruptor. Increase of obesity, diabetes, cancer (breast and prostrate). Reduced fertility. Alternatives: stainless steel water bottles, glass and stainless food containers, mother’s milk, bpa free compost fillings. From www.ewg.org In January, the Food and Drug Administration, which previously called BPA safe, announced it has “some concerns” about the chemical’s potential effects on brain development of fetuses, infants and children. It did not say BPA is unsafe.

The Environmental Working Group recommends these tips for reducing BPA exposure from receipts:
* Minimize receipt collection by declining receipts at gas pumps, ATMs and other machines when possible.
* Store receipts separately in an envelope in a wallet or purse.
* Never give a child a receipt to hold or play with.
* After handling a receipt, wash hands before preparing and eating food (a universally recommended practice even for those who have not handled receipts). * Do not use alcohol-based hand cleaners after handling receipts. A recent study showed that these products can increase the skin’s BPA absorption.
* Take advantage of store services that email or archive paperless purchase records. * Do not recycle receipts and other thermal paper. BPA residues from receipts will contaminate recycled paper.
* If you are unsure, check whether paper is thermally treated by rubbing it with a coin. Thermal paper discolors with the friction; conventional paper does not.
http://www.ewg.org/bpa-in-store-receipts

Why? Articles have shown that traditional ice cream has chemicals in it. Something so good can be so bad. It is true that we as consumers need to look at even the ice cream we eat in order to avoid chemicals. Many ice cream companies don’t have to disclose ALL the ingredients which include chemicals that reside in anti-freeze and paint remover. Yikes. Trying to eat healthy is one thing, but having a treat once in a while is fine and healthy for the spirit but it would be nice to select a sugary decadence without a garage full of greasy items. While I was reading “Nourishing Traditions,” (pg. 551) – (a fantastic cookbook on nutrient dense foods and cooking) I was dumbfounded to find a host of common chemicals were found inside ice cream!

Here are the list of chemicals you will be surprised to find in traditional ice creams.
Know your brands and try making it yourself (recipes and eco friendly ice cream maker). Treat yourself without harming your body.

Diethylglycol: A cheap chemical used as an emulsifier instead of eggs; is the same chemical used in antifreeze and paint remover.

Piperonal: Used in place of vanilla. This chemical is used to kill lice.

Aldehyde C-17: Used to flavor cherry ice cream. It’s an inflammable liquid also used in aniline dyes, plastic and rubber.

Ethyl Acetate: Used to give ice cream a pineapple flavor – and as a cleaner for both leather and textiles; its vapors have been known to cause chronic lung, liver and heart damage.

Butyraldehyde: Used in nut flavored ice cream. It’s one of the ingredients in rubber cement.

Amylacetate: Used for its banana flavor. It’s also used as an oil paint solvent.

Benzyl Acetate: Used for its strawberry flavor. It’s a nitrate solvent.”

*  3 egg yolks
* 1/2 cup maple syrup
* 1 tablespoon vanilla  extract
* 1 tablespoon arrowroot
* 3 cups heavy cream, preferably raw, not ultrapasteurized

Beat egg yolks and blend in remaining ingredients. Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to instructions. (Remember to choose the highest quality ingredients you can find like raw cream, eggs from pastured chickens, or at least organic eggs, and organic (grade B, if you can find it) maple syrup. Pure vanilla extract and arrowroot powder or flour can be found in most health food stores.)

According to a new study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG.ORG), Triclosan, a harmful chemical is in many more everyday products that I thought. I have been telling my clients, children’s school, friends and family about this for many years and now with more scientific research, the proof is in the pudding (hopefully without Triclosan in it).

There is a handy guide from the Environmental Working Group on How to avoid Triclosan, the unsafe ingredient used as an anti-bacterial property. Pass it on and help inform those you care about and your children’s school. Make the switch to regular, healthy soap, like castile. Cleanwell is a great alternative for anti-bacterial properites using Thyme oil. Seventh Generation is using CleanWell’s formula in their new wipes.

Here is a list of what products that don’t carry Triclosan.

What is Triclosan?
Triclosan, a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient in many detergents, dish-washing liquids, soaps (Anti Bacterial DIAL AND SOFT SOAP), deodorants, cosmetics, lotions, anti-microbial creams, various toothpastes, and an additive in various plastics and textiles. The safety of triclosan has been questioned in regard to environmental and human health. While the companies that manufacture products containing this chemical claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a pesticide. Triclosan is also known as Irgasan and Microban.

1. Health risks
Researchers have raised concerns about triclosan and its link to dioxins, which are highly carcinogenic chemicals that can cause severe health problems such as damaged liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, suppress the immune system, and cause hormonal disruption, paralysis, cancer, sterility and brain hemorrhages.

2. Resistant to Antibiotics
Scientists worry that because triclosan kills bacteria in a similar way as antibiotics, bacteria that become resistant to triclosan will also be resistant to antibiotics.

3. Same class as Toxic Pesticides (Dioxin)
The chemical formulation and molecular structure of this compound are similar to some of the most toxic chemicals on earth, relating it to dioxins and PCBs. The EPA gives triclosan high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk. Triclosan has not been completely tested and analyzed for all health and environmental risks, but since it occurs in the category of the chemicals which are known to have the detrimental effects described here, do you want it added to products you use every day

4. Environmental Effects
Triclosan is highly toxic to algae. Because algae are the first-step producers in aquatic ecosystems, researchers believe that high levels of triclosan discharged into the environment may destroy the balance of aquatic ecosystems. The risks are especially high immediately downstream from waste water treatment plants.

5. Triclosan and Allergies
Overuse of triclosan (and other antibacterials) is also linked to allergies. This is based on the “hygiene hypothesis,” which theorizes that there is a correlation between “too much hygiene” and increased allergies and asthma. The concept is that children who are raised in an overly clean environment have immune systems that are not challenged and thus do not develop and mature properly. This hypothesis is based on studies that have found an increase in the frequency of allergies, asthma, and eczema in persons who have been raised in more sterile and hygienic environments.

According to the American Medical Association, “Despite their recent proliferation in consumer products, the use of antimicrobial agents such as triclosan in consumer products has not been studied extensively. No data exist to support their efficacy when used in such products or any need for them … It may be prudent to avoid the use of antimicrobial agents in consumer products ….”

Here are some guidelines on how to stay protected from bacteria without antimicrobials:

* Wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Regular soap lowers the surface tension of water, helping it attach to and wash away unwanted bacteria. Lather your hands for at least 10 to 15 seconds and then rinse them off in warm water. It is important to wash your hands often, especially when handling food, before eating, after going to the bathroom, and when someone in your house is sick.

* picture of boy with hands to face Take time to teach children the correct way to wash their hands.

* Dry hands with a clean towel to help brush off any germs that did not get washed down the drain.

* Wash surfaces that come in contact with food with a detergent and water.

* Wash children’s hands and toys regularly to prevent infection.

Because triclosan has become so common in soaps and toiletries, be sure to carefully read all ingredients when buying these products. Triclosan is also known as Irgasan and Microban.

Schools:

Check with your school to see if it uses triclosan-containing products in its classrooms and bathrooms. If you feel like you need antibacterial protection, there are some essential oils that have antimicrobial properties, such as Australian tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract, which are sometimes included in natural soaps. Alcohol-based antibacterial soaps, such as Purell, do not carry the same risks of antibiotic resistance and dioxin contamination as triclosan-containing products. Cleanwell is a good solution!

Action:
Beyond Pesticides (formerly known as the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides) works with allies in protecting public health and the environment to lead the transition to a world free of toxic pesticides. Be sure to check out their very informative pesticide fact sheets. You can call Beyond Pesticides in Washington D.C. at 202-543-5450.

TIP: If you are out and about and find that the restaurant or store you are at has soap in the bathroom from the list above, bring your own small castile liquid soap and wash your hands without chemicals.

Thank you for reading this important information and for encouraging your school to MAKE THE SWITCH TO REGULAR SOAP.
